Biography

Countries around the world share common educational goals: to effectively improve students' academic achievement and to reduce the gap in academic performance between students from different family backgrounds. To what extent do countries differ in educational efficiency and equity? To what extent is student learning affected by family socioeconomic background and educational policies? To address these questions, and to leverage country differences in educational policies and institutions, I conduct international studies using data from PISA and TIMSS, which involve students at primary and secondary schools in several dozen countries. These studies are supplemented by educational panel data collected in Taiwan. Specifically, my research covers an international comparison of performance variation within and between classrooms/schools, the effect of high-stakes testing on student performance, educational expansion and inequality, and country differences in the use of out-of-school-time tutorials by student family background and academic achievement. Research projects in progress include the effect of high-stakes examinations on inequality of educational opportunity and the development of an adequate measure of family socioeconomic background.
