ICPSR Announces Winners of 2026 Data Communication Scholarship

Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 Data Communication Scholarship at ICPSR! Tara Naomi Trivedi, (Chemistry) of Stony Brook University, earned First Place with a video submission titled “Tracking America During COVID-19.” Tiffany Phoebe Sudijono (Honors Cognitive Science & Information Science (UX)) of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, earned Second Place with a video submission titled “Bridging Medicine and AI: Acute Stroke MRI Data.”

In Memoriam: Walter Giesbrecht

ICPSR was saddened to learn from IASSIST about the passing of long-time IASSIST member Walter Giesbrecht, who died on Sunday. Giesbrecht served for many decades as the Data Librarian at York University (Canada) and was an active and generous member of the data services community. He was also deeply engaged in Canadian data initiatives and professional organizations, including the Data Liberation Initiative and CAPDU (Canadian Association of Public Data Users), and he served as the Official Representative for ICPSR at York University. Global Metadata Milestone: Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) Recognized in the ISO Framework, Strengthening ICPSR’s Metadata Foundation   

The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) Alliance suite of products was been formally recognized as an international standard through the publication of ISO/PAS 25955 by  the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in March 2026. [More]

U‑M collaborators and Washington University team help advance safe sharing of qualitative research data under new NIH requirements  

With funding from the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) National Human Genome Research Institute, a Washington University Team collaborated with researchers and data curators at ICPSR to develop resources to help scientists to meet the NIH’s new requirements. [More] 

Faces of ICPSR: Steven Chen

Meet Steven Chen, a PhD candidate at Temple University who grew up in the tropics but prefers snowy weather. He’s been using ICPSR data for about five years and loves how easy it is to find data for statistics classes and research, having already published two papers with ICPSR data and working on a third.

Q: What is a favorite memory or instance you have working with ICPSR? What makes ICPSR a great place?

A: I have used ICPSR datasets for several statistics classes during my coursework. ICPSR is an amazing place to find open datasets, which is especially critical for graduate students who often do not have access to their own data.
