Behind the Scenes Preserving USAID Global Education Data: 'All is Not Lost'

Vital global learning datasets from USAID are now available through ICPSR’s DataLumos, preserving public access.
|

|
When the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) ended its education programs in early 2025, years of valuable global education data were at risk of being lost. A new article shares insights on how members of the data community joined forces to salvage, reorganize, and publish over 2,500 files from 109 projects across 43 countries. Their efforts led to a new data-sharing partnership, enabling public access to these datasets via the DataLumos repository. The team continues working to improve access and encourages contributions to further strengthen the USAID education data collection. Approval Process for ICPSR Council is Underway!
|
|
|
ICPSR Official Representatives (ORs) began to receive emails from Vote-Now.com (VTNW) on Monday Nov. 10, 2025. This is the approval phase of the process after ICPSR members nominated several ICPSR Council candidates in January. The resulting six candidates on the Council slate have agreed to serve four-year terms beginning in June 2026; they will join the remaining six Council members whose terms end in 2028. ORs will also find the nominee for the Council Chair, who will serve out the remainder of her two-years with this added responsibility. The approval process runs Nov. 10-26, 2025. Thank you to our members for your participation in this process, from nomination to approval!

Kathryn is a Data Project Manager and lifelong Michigander who loves helping others navigate data sharing and enjoys the supportive, community-minded culture at ICPSR. Outside of work, she paints whimsical watercolor kitty calendars, featured in an article in the University Record.

|
Q: What’s one ICPSR dataset you find fascinating, unusual, or you’ve had a hand in getting deposited?
A: I think the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) series is a rich longitudinal resource. My previous director, James McNally, often would say it was one of the few studies about older adults that treated respondents like adults – the survey includes questions ranging from activities of daily living to intimate relationship experiences. As for unusual, I think the ABC and CBS poll series data are interesting. There are questions about respondents’ favorite holidays, favorite fantasy worlds, and other randomness.
