The IEAS is the most internationalized regional research institution in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences in Academia Sinica, and Academia Sinica’s only academic unit that focuses its research on Western countries. Therefore, this Institute is in every way deserving to take the lead among the academic institutions of Academia Sinica in playing a more active research role in the humanities and social sciences. Academic research is characterized by continuity, accumulation, systematization, and innovation. With the joint efforts of all past and present directors and researchers since founding, the IEAS has established a remarkable research scale and exceptional research environment. The Institute has promoted original research projects and realized a great number of significant academic research accomplishments, as well as cultivating outstanding academic talents in European and American Studies in Taiwan. The main future objectives of the IEAS include encouraging its research members to expand and strengthen their own respective research studies, and actively promoting the five thematic research projects. It is hoped that, on the basis of previous achievements, new topics and methods will be introduced that will expand and strengthen research of this Institute in general. In particular, the IEAS endeavors to increase its understanding of research trends in related fields in neighboring countries and regions—China, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, and Southeast Asian countries—and is looking forward to finding more opportunities to play a central role in establishing stronger international academic interaction and cooperation in the near future. Additionally, the Institute will continue to observe new issues, such as artificial intelligence, current major social developments in Europe and the United States, declining birthrates, population aging and health, childcare policies and legislation, food safety, COVID-19, climate change, China-U.S. competition, Taiwan-U.S. relations, Taiwan-Europe relations, Taiwan security, etc. By applying its research energy to these multifaceted aspects, and taking advantage of being an interdisciplinary and integrative research institution, the IEAS uses what it has learned from the European and American experiences to provide useful reflections and references on social policy issues for Taiwan’s decision-makers.
