50 Years and Beyond: The History and Prospects of the Institute of European and American Studies (1972-2022)

The IEAS has assumed the important role of advancing gender equality within its administrative staff. In 1998, a female researcher served as the deputy director. In 2012, all three managerial supervisors were female researchers. Colleagues have fully utilized their academic expertise and made great efforts in fighting for gender equality, which is evident in practical experience, such as promoting the idea that workplace sexual harassment is an integral component of employment discrimination, enacting the “Act of Gender Equality in Employment”, promoting gender equality, preventing employment discrimination, preventing sexual harassment, etc. (3)Advocating Comprehensiveness of Professional Knowledge In April 2014, the IEAS established the “E.U. & U.S. Public Policy Forum” on our website to share what we have learned. The purpose of this forum is to introduce relevant theories and practical experiences of social developments in the United States and Europe, and to provide a platform for academic discussions. The forum enables people of all walk of life to come together, pinpointing the problems and needs of Taiwan’s social development and policy, and considering suitable strategies. Thus far, a series of articles analyzing the development of theories and policies in Europe and the United States have been published. The topics discussed include: climate change, the civil service system, freedom of speech, parental leave, homosexuality, the performance of primary and secondary school students, food safety, European debt crisis, etc. The articles are expressed in plain and easy-tounderstand terms, which facilitates reading by the general public. It is said that, “The wise learn from others’ experience,” and this forum is the perfect evidence of this expression, by which proves a useful reference and guide for formulating future policies in Taiwan. In addition, the members of the Language, Cognition, and Society: Trends in Contemporary Western Philosophy thematic research project not only provide classes via Academia Sinica’s “Philosophy and Mind” lecture series, but also consistently participate in relevant philosophical, historical, and cultural social communities, such as “Lugeng Cultural Forum”, “Fri. Philo”, “Watchout Citizenedu”, “Philosophical Education Development Organization” (PHEDO), “Philosophy Medium”, etc., which actively promote philosophical trends and reform initiatives at all levels of society. (4)Cultivation of Outstanding Talents The IEAS has likewise shouldered the important responsibility of cultivating talents. The members of our research faculty have ardently explored and trained outstanding young scholars through the channels of “Postdoctoral Scholar Program” and “Fellowships for Doctoral Candidates” sponsored by Academia Sinica. Between July 2008 and December 2021, a total of 61 were employed as postdoctoral researchers and selected as recipient of the doctoral candidate fellowship in our Institute. 35 50 Years and Beyond: The History and Prospects of the Institute of European and American Studies
