50 Years and Beyond: The History and Prospects of the Institute of European and American Studies (1972-2022)

3. Actively Investing in Various Academic Activities (1)Collaborations with Domestic and International Academic Communities Since the establishment of the Institute of American Culture, academic activities and scholarly exchanges have been crucial parts of this Institute. In addition to achieving individual research accomplishments, the IEAS actively interacts and cooperates with domestic/international academic communities. For instance, the Institute offers its research faculty short-term research opportunities abroad and invites local and foreign scholars to make short-term visits or lecture at the IEAS in order to increase the opportunities for its researchers to engage in academic circles outside of Taiwan. Moreover, IEAS researchers have often demonstrated their academic energy and capabilities by attending various international academic conferences where they published papers and gave important lectures at various local universities. Between 2008 and 2021, the IEAS held a total of 379 academic lectures and workshops, 85 medium and large academic conferences, 38 of which were international conferences. To strengthen academic cooperation with other countries and actively promote internationalization, the IEAS invites renowned foreign scholars to visit and encourages its research members to go abroad for short-term research visits or participate in conferences. So far, approximately 270 scholars from Europe, the United States, and Asia, as well as important members of the European Commission, have visited the Institute, which facilitated interactive dialogue between IEAS researchers and visiting scholars in related fields, and furthered academic exchanges and collaborations between the two sides. Furthermore, since 1978, research members of the IEAS have attended more than 700 international meetings, where they published papers and engaged in discussions with scholars, which greatly contributed to promoting the reputation and status of Taiwan and Academia Sinica within international academic communities. In addition, Academia Sinica has signed exchange and cooperation agreements with the British Academy, DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service), EHESS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences), etc. The IEAS researchers have also been able to use similar bilateral agreements to enhance interactions with foreign academic circles and play an important role in the research of related topics. Moreover, the IEAS encourages colleagues to hold academic conferences on specific topics and establish an academic platform for publishing research findings and exchanging research experiences. In the early days, the IEAS focused mainly on fundamental research. In the past two decades, the Institute has gradually shifted its research emphasis to interdisciplinary studies and practical issues. For example, the Cultural Studies thematic research project is concerned with the study of the British and American underprivileged ethnic literature; the Language, Cognition, and Society: 31 50 Years and Beyond: The History and Prospects of the Institute of European and American Studies
