Dates: July 19-21, 2022
Format: Hybrid (in-person or virtual)

This workshop will be offered in a hybrid format: in-person and virtual real-time.

This three-day workshop will support participants in planning and conducting secondary data analysis using data from the Health and Medical Care Archive (HMCA). Obtaining a better understanding of the organizational and operational attributes of public health delivery systems is a critical step in elucidating pathways for improving public health services. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is working alongside others to build a Culture of Health providing everyone in America a fair and just opportunity for health and well-being.

Sessions will include an in-depth overview of the National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems (NALSYS). This survey of local governmental public health agencies was conducted to measure the types of public health activities implemented in local communities and the networks of organizations that contribute to these activities. The survey was fielded initially in 1998 and again in 2006, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2022 (ongoing) with periodic sample expansions in order to measure geographic variation and longitudinal change in local public health delivery systems. Please see the survey series link for more details about the data. Instructors will describe how the data have been linked with other datasets, including area health resource data, vital statistics, and healthcare claims, in order to study the determinants and effects of changes in public health delivery systems. Each afternoon will include hands-on workshop sessions that include guided exercises and consultations for exploring your own research interests. Early career participants are especially encouraged to apply. Participants will be using their own laptops.
