Listed Topical Workshops meet July 8-12
An Introduction to Network Analysis
This workshop will lay the groundwork for social network analysis (SNA) from conceptual, statistical, empirical, and computational foundations.
Experiments in Social Science Research
Students will learn about quasi experimental and experimental research designs, the benefits and uses of between- and within-subjects experimental manipulations, and the importance of random assignment.
Multilevel Modeling in the Social Sciences
In this workshop, we examine various types of multilevel models in social science applications, focusing on the statistical properties of different specifications and how to estimate and interpret the models in RStudio.
Process Tracing in Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research
Process tracing is a research method designed to learn how things work in real-world cases. Increasingly used across the social sciences, as well as in applied policy evaluation, process tracing methods involve unpacking causal processes (aka mechanisms) as they play out within cases and tracing them empirically, enabling causal inferences about the processes that link causes and outcomes together.
Sensitivity Analysis: Quantifying the Robustness of Inferences to Alternative Factors or Data
The phrase “But have you controlled for …” is fundamental to social science but can also create a quandary. Even after controlling for the most likely alternative explanations for an inferred effect there may be some alternative explanation that cannot be ruled out with observed data. The first response is to develop the best models that maximally leverage the available data. After that, sensitivity analyses can inform discourse about an inference by quantifying the unobserved conditions necessary to change the inference. |
