Whenever the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey are released, media and Ministries of Education from around the world pay close attention to the performance of local pupils and the rankings of other countries. Conducted every four years since 1995, the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) assessment includes fourth and eighth graders (typically nine and thirteen years old) from dozens of countries. Thousands of same-grade students from each participating country sit the TIMSS; as they are randomly selected, the survey results effectively represent the performance of the students of each participating country. Taiwanese fourth and eighth grades have participated in TIMSS assessment every four years since 2003. How does the performance of Taiwanese students in mathematics compared to that of students in other countries? What percentage of Taiwanese students outperforms the Advanced International Benchmarks? What are the disparities in the learning performances of Taiwanese students? Is a widening-gap phenomenon observed within classes?
