[2008] Transgressions and Innovations: Asian American Literary and Cultural Studies Transgressions and Innovations: Asian American Literary and Cultural Studies

This book is divided into two parts, with each part comprised of four articles. Part I, “Innovations of Transgressions,” focuses on the following subjects: How does the Chinese Hawaiian poet Wing Tek Lum appropriate Chinese classical literary allusions in his poetic texts so as to achieve cultural recreation? How does the Filipino American novelist Carlos Bulosan represent class and ethnicity in America Is in the Heart? How does the Chinese American director Wayne Wang represent the complexity of space, ethnicity, and identity in Chan Is Missing? How does the Chinese American architect Maya Lin represent trauma with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial so as to achieve reconciliation?

Part II, “Transgressions of Innovations,” deals with the institutional development of Asian American literary and cultural studies in Taiwan and offers some metacritical reflections of an observer/participant. The subjects treated include Asian American literary studies in Taiwan, Chinese American literary studies in Taiwan, the invention of tradition and Chinese American literature, as well as the positioning of the Chinese-language literature in the U.S.

Together, these articles provide some critical interventions and reflections of a Taiwanese scholar situated at the intersection between Asia and America in this age of globalization, multiculturalism, and transnationalism.
